KC-10 Refueling

Closing in on the KC-10 tanker.

When you’re cruising 350 miles-per-hour at 25,000 feet, you don’t generally want to look out the cockpit window and see another widebody jet only a few feet ahead. But the other day, that’s exactly what I saw. I felt a little bit of fear and a lot of awe as our 400,000-pound KC-10 cozied up to another widebody KC-10 for some mid-air refueling. Although my Air Force pilot husband does this day in and day out, I was absolutely dumbstruck watching it in real time, especially since both the aircraft commander and the co were in their twenties. After years at United, I’m used to gray-haired experience at the front. And this was no auto-pilot scenario. Staying in a “safe” position and attached to the tanker’s refueling boom requires constant adjustments to the yoke and throttles, not to mention intense focus. Amazingly, pilots do this for as up to thirty minutes, or in extreme cases, an hour. Even the plane doesn’t seem to be comfortable as its traffic collision avoidance system repeatedly says, “traffic, traffic.” Until the pilots turn it off that is.

Closer...This is actually zoomed in a touch so you can see the boom. My camera does make everything look much smaller and farther away though, so believe me, this is some crazy shit.

Now we

Here’s the short video I took.

Kafka's Pharmacy

As seen by my friend Dawn Scott at her base pharmacy.
While being married to the military has many benefits, efficiency is not one of them.

What Happens in Korea

When your spouse is in the military, a news reporter is often the first to tell you your plans are out the window. For example, if the President announces a surprise trip abroad, I can figure that my Air Force husband will soon be packing bags to support the colossal transportation and security effort.
So when I woke this morning to see that North Korea attacked South Korea, I started rethinking Thanksgiving. Matt’s squadron has the day off, but they have to stay local, just in case. I’m sure it pains the squadron commander to tell his staff they can’t visit faraway families when chances are they won’t be needed. Events like this make me thankful someone at the top was thinking ahead.

You know you live in Jersey when…

You forget to pump your own gas. After six months of being spoiled on this side of the Delaware River, I was outside of Philly the other day and sat in my car for several minutes, growing increasingly miffed that the attendant was so slow to attend to me, when I realized (slap forehead), I’m in Pennsylvania.

Now we've switched places and are about to refuel the other KC-10. This is taken from the aerial refueling compartment at the back of the plane. The boom operator sits in front of a huge window and maneuvers the boom into the receptacle.
